After an almost two-month search, the Gravenhurst Business Improvement Area (BIA) has announced the hiring of Gravenhurst resident Laura Meikle as the part-time administrative co-ordinator for the BIA.
Meikle will be working with the board of directors on the behalf of all downtown merchants and businesses to increase the visibility and prominence of Gravenhurst through marketing, event planning, communications, and membership maintenance.
A longtime fan of the downtown core, she is excited about her return after previously working for the BIA.
“I’m delighted to be back working for and on behalf of the Gravenhurst BIA,” she said. “The board is composed of a very dynamic group of people that are fully committed to Gravenhurst and its downtown. They are bursting with enthusiasm, great energy and ideas. I’m very excited about the direction they are taking and the many initiatives that they are undertaking on behalf of their membership. I’m looking forward to being a part of it.”
BIA chair Judy Terry said Meikle brings the right mix of private and public sector experience as well as the experience of owning and operating a business.
She and her husband Doug own Seasons Change Mechanical, a small HVAC business in town. Prior to opening the business just over five years ago, Meikle worked as director of programs, promotions and public relations for Taboo Resort. Among other things, she was responsible for community and public relations and marketing and special events. Prior to that, Meikle worked for the Ministry of Housing as its manager of community services and recreation in Toronto.
“We are very excited about the energy and experience that Laura brings to the team,” said Terry. “Laura’s proven leadership and marketing background and past accomplishments are the perfect combination to help lead the organization into new opportunities for continued growth.”
“Laura has hit the road running as there is much to do in the weeks ahead,” Terry said. The BIA is finalizing its spring/summer marketing plan, which includes its annual signature event, a Mother’s Day Fashion Show on Wednesday, May 14 in support of Communities in Bloom.
The BIA is also partnering with Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce’s Antique and Classic Car Show to be held June 14, which will have a new staging area on the main street, and is preparing for the Steamship Festival & Sidewalk Sale Aug. 8-9.
