A 19-year-old Gravenhurst man is facing a slew of charges after being seen travelling at a high rate of speed along Highway 118 East, near Vankoughnet recently.
On May 1, Bracebridge OPP officers were dispatched to assist a plainclothes OPP officer from another jurisdiction who was travelling in an unmarked police car. Police say the information received by uniformed members was that a male was stopped for operating a car in a very dangerous manner, including high rates of speed.
The accused, Ryan Binder, is alleged to have passed several cars including the unmarked police car at very high rates of speed and on curves in the roadway, which forced other cars toward the shoulder. The unmarked police car attempted to stop the suspect vehicle as it reached speeds of 180 km/h in a posted 60-km/h zone, police report.
Binder was eventually stopped and identified. Police report that upon inspection of his vehicle, it was found to be unsafe with bald tires. The vehicle was impounded for seven days under the new racing legislation. Binder is charged with operating an unsafe vehicle, obstructing police, dangerous driving and failing to provide a driver’s licence.
