The Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School Lakers senior girls soccer team is still winning despite being out of rhythm early in the season. The start was slow, but it ended with a flood of offence by the Lakers for the 4-0 win against the visiting Parry Sound High School Panthers Thursday.
All of the team’s scoring came in the second half and was started by Rachel Baranik.
The aggressive forward, who was a threat to score on every possession, took a pass from the wing and broke down the middle, evading her defender and managing to get off a sliding kick to squeeze the ball through the legs of the Panthers keeper. It was the eventual winner in the lopsided game as the Panthers barely threatened.
Besides a few individual efforts and corners, the Panthers, who had key injuries and roster omissions, were outpaced and clearly outmatched.
The gaps at the back of the field for the Panthers provided ample chances, such as a breakaway attempt by Randi Baxter, who struck it wide while sliding.
Laker Adrienne Lade, unmarked, found daylight and struck it just from the top of the box, blowing it past the Panthers keeper for the insurance goal, 2-0.
On the next possession Ann Featherstone of the Lakers added to the total, pouncing on a deflection in the box off a corner by Laker Mallorie Webb, making it 3-0.
Lade finished the game with two goals as she found the back of the net again from a similar spot as her first goal, bring it to 4-0.
The team has won its first two games, outscoring their opponents eight goals to one despite the team being out of sync, said coach Jason Sprathoff.
“The team is starting to play well. They are getting used to playing with each other. However, there are still some fundamentals that we do not do consistently. We will be working on those for the next little while,” he said.
This game falls on the heels of their home-opener win, 4-1, against Almaguin Highlands Secondary School last Tuesday. The Lakers improve to 2-0 on the season.
Parry Sound is winless, entering the game with a 2-0 loss to St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School.
The favourable results up to this point in the season will have to continue as the Lakers battle for the playoffs.
“To make the playoffs — that’s when things become a little more serious. One loss and we are done. We should finish first or second at the end of the season,” Sprathoff said.
Perennial rivals the Huntsville High School Hoyas are scheduled for Tuesday, May 20.
“I haven’t seen them play this year, so I’m not exactly sure how good they are. However, if it’s anything like past years we will have our hands full,” he said.
Goalkeepers for the Lakers were Jenna MacKinnon and Savannah Robinson, who shared in the shutout.
Their next home game is against St. Dominic this Thursday. The seniors play following the junior match that begins at 2 p.m.
