The District Municipality of Muskoka is asking residents to call ahead if they wish to speak at an upcoming meeting on Muskoka’s debt reduction strategy. The meeting will be held Aug. 15 at Bracebridge Sportsplex. It will be conducted as a committee of the whole of district council, meaning anyone wishing to speak must give notice to the municipality at least 48 hours ahead of time.
All delegations are limited to 10 minutes and groups of more than five people are limited to two speakers.
An agenda for the meeting will be available on the district’s website at www.muskoka.on.ca.
Muskoka’s debt reduction strategy has captured public interest over the past several months for its controversial ideas on how to reduce Muskoka’s estimated $100-million debt load.
The majority of the debt was issued for water and sewer treatment plant upgrades and expansions.
In recent weeks, several councillors have voiced support for requiring all taxpayers, rural and waterfront included, to share some of the costs.
Other options being explored for reducing the debt include increasing development charges, local improvement charges and overall contributions to Muskoka’s environmental reserve, which funds water, sewer and lagoon-related projects.
Reducing future capital expenditures and using Muskoka’s federal gas tax allocation to finance upcoming projects is also recommended.
Earlier this year, district council agreed to create a new debt reduction fund to finance new water and sewer projects.
Increasing contributions to the fund is also planned.
