Council approves signs for condo project

A number of events, as well as a local condo development will now be able to spread the word a little more handily after Bracebridge town council approved a number of sign variance applications last week.

Goodfellow Construction, developer for the Legends at the Falls condominiums on Kimberley Avenue, requested a sign variance to allow the company to display one ‘A’ frame sign at four locations in Bracebridge, including the intersections of Ontario St. and Kimberley Ave., Manitoba and Ontario streets, Kimberley Ave. and Quebec St., and Wellington and Quebec streets.

Councillor Barry Young stated during the recent development services committee meeting that he doesn’t have a problem with the request in theory, but because of the amount of snow Bracebridge sees, he has a concern with the signs ending up on sidewalks.

“I just don’t think this is going to work in January, February and March,” said Young. He added he will only be in favour of the request from Goodfellow as long as the signs are not on the walking part of the sidewalk, and the snow will be removed in winter.

“I just don’t want them (the signs) to bleed onto the sidewalk in the winter. As long as it’s not on the travelled part of the sidewalk, I am fine,” said Young.

The development services committee and then council approved the sign variance for Goodfellow, which is good for one year, and requires the signs to be in place only from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

The Goodfellow application was the only one to draw comment from councillors, and sign variance requests were also approved for directional and promotion signs for Bracebridge Fall Fair, the Bracebridge Lions Club bingo events and the Bracebridge BIA Septemberfest.
