Edythe May McGill

July 6, 1916 — October 4, 2007

Edythe McGill (née Mead) passed away on Oct. 4 at Leisureworld Nursing Home in Gravenhurst at the age of 91.

She was predeceased by her husband and all brothers and sisters. She is survived by her children Ross McGill (Ann) of Islington, Wayne McGill (Barbara) of Gravenhurst, Marion Linkert (the late Carl) of Milton, Betty McGowan (Michael) of Oshawa, nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Edythe was born on July 6, 1916 in Port Credit, the youngest in a family of nine. Her father was a butcher by trade who operated a grocery store and meat market. She graduated from high school at age 17 with her senior matric and was preparing for university and teaching, but love intervened when she met and married Garnet.

While she was busy raising four children, her husband rose to become chief of police of the City of Mississauga. After her husband died, she moved to Gravenhurst where Wayne built a granny suite for her in their carriage house. In later years, she became an adored resident of Gravenhurst Retirement Manor and then Leisureworld Nursing Home.

Edythe had a flair for creating things. Her creations ranged from her famous hat designs to her room arrangements. She was constantly trying out new backgrounds in her environment, whatever her home might be. Her dress was an important part of herself and she always maintained a high standard in her personal grooming. Each family member has one of her paintings hung in their home as a memory of another facet of her creativity.

A memorial service was held at Cavill Funeral Home on Oct. 13 with interment in Lakeview Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations to South Muskoka Memorial Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
