December 21, 1924 — October 9, 2007

Jack Hastings passed away peacefully at Perth Hospital, with his loving family by his side, on Tuesday Oct. 9. He was in his 83rd year.

Husband of Lois (Fleming) and dearest father of Judy (Bob) Stone, Brighton; Michael (Chyvonne), Kilworthy; and David (Wendy), Gravenhurst. Grandpa will be fondly and sadly missed by grandchildren: Krista (David) Thomas; Jeremy and Jeff Stone; Kara (Mark) Vancise; Kaylea (Kevin) Ferguson; Jodie (Daryl) Knudson; and Amanda Hastings. Great-grandfather will be dearly missed by Jared, Jordan and Hannah. Jack will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his lifelong friend and companion Ruth Fawcett. Jack is predeceased by his parents Harold and Verna Hastings and by his grandson Michael Stone.

Jack was born in Severn Bridge on Dec. 21, 1924. He married Lois Fleming after active service with the Royal Canadian Air Force, in 1945. He owned and operated Fleming Lumber and Hastings Home Builders until his retirement.

Jack actively contributed to numerous community and district projects. He was a member of the United Church and served on the Morrison Township Board of Education during the construction of K.P. Manson School, Severn Bridge.

Awarded the Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Fellowship Award for his service, Jack was also instrumental to the success of the R.M.S. Segwun, in Gravenhurst.

Jack was active in municipal politics and was a member of Gravenhurst Town Council and was appointed to the inaugural district council of 1970. He held memberships in the Masonic Lodge and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 302.

Music was central to Jack’s life. He mastered the trombone, trumpet and tuba, played in concert bands and was the founding member of the senior band known as the Bifocals. Most recently, he enjoyed and was a member of the well-known Perth men’s choral group Men of the Tay.

Jack will be remembered as a loving and generous father and grandfather. He loved spending many happy summers with his family at their cottage on Kahshe Lake. Until recently, Jack was blessed with good health and enjoyed a full, active life.

The family received friends on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at W.J. Cavill Funeral Home in Gravenhurst. A memorial service followed at 1:30 p.m. Interment took place at St. Andrews/St. James Cemetery, Orillia. In lieu of flowers, to honour Jack’s memory, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family.
