Toronto Police Service has identified the human remains found near Doe Lake Road in Gravenhurst last month as 33-year old Frania Cardenas of Toronto.

The identification was made Tuesday afternoon following an almost month long investigation by the Muskoka Crime Unit.

Cardenas’ remains were found by a hunter Nov. 9 near Ruttan Road West, which is located off Muskoka Road 6 in Gravenhurst. An extensive search of the area by the OPP’s canine unit and emergency response and underwater search and rescue teams later followed.

Specialists from the Chief Coroner’s Officer were also called in to help identity the victim.

Toronto police, who have not yet determined the cause of the victim’s death, said Cardenas was listed as the City’s 66th homicide of 2003.

Police reported that at the time of her disappearance, police issued a news release asking the public for information on two missing people who were last seen Nov. 29, 2003 in the area of Evans Avenue and Highway 427 in Etobicoke.

Two months later, in early 2004, police issued an arrest warrant on a charge of second degree murder for the victim’s husband, 35-year old Yangi Wanji of Toronto.

No other details on the case were provided.

Toronto Police Service is continuing to investigate the matter with the cooperation of the Muskoka Crime Unit. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 1-416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 1-416-222-TIPS (8477).
