Everyone loves a little beat to tap their feet to and to sing along with Disney’s production, High School Musical, a musical about two rebellious students, one a male basketball player and the other a female brainiac, who secretly audition for an big annual show. The production will be on stage at the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre this week thanks to HUB productions.
The production is directed by HUB Productions’ Amy Bridle, with choreography by sister Emily, and Dana Clark as music director.
Students throughout the community are starring in the musical presenting their artsy talents.
A wide span of ages is represented from Grade 6s and 7 all the way to graduating Grades 11 and 12. Approximately 50 students are featured in the performance, and anyone who auditioned automatically got a part. The major roles of High School Musical got an advanced audition to see who had the talents to fill the role. The rest of the roles are made up of four cliques, who are the Brainiacs, Rebels, Thespians, and the Jocks and Cheerleaders.
BMLSS student Thalia Smith remembers from audition day that director Amy Bridle specifically stated, “Everyone’s important. Even if you didn’t get a main part, you’re still a big role in the play itself.”
Practice, practice, practice! Outfit selections, rehearsing lines, facial expressions, clarity — key roles to making the performance phenomenal, but are also tough to get down right. The students have been steadily working hard to make this production a good one.
“It’s a lot of work because you have to be ready to sing, dance and act. But it’s worth it because it’s so much fun and you get to meet new people,” said Smith, a student starring in the play as one of the Brainiac members. She also mentioned, “Emily made up some new, exciting choreography but most is from the movie.”
The High School Musical play crew has already travelled to Bracebridge Public School, Monck Public School and Macaulay Public School to present at a spirit assembly, a five-minute presentation for the encouragement to come out and view the performance this coming weekend. Singing “the mega mix,” which was a combination of all the songs that will be within the play, had some kids exiting the assembly with curiosity and excitement for this production.
Lights, camera, action! The play is suited for all ages and anyone is allowed to come with the purchase of a ticket. Dates are Dec. 6 and 7 at 7 p.m., followed with matinees on Dec. 8 and 9 at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre box office.
