December 14, 1927 – November 23, 2007
Jean Gilbert Morrison of Germania was often thought of as the matriarch of Germania and known to all as Grandma Jean.
She passed away November 23, 2007 at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Born to Maude and Floyd Bruce on December 14, 1927, Jean married Wib Gilbert in July 1948 and spent all of her married life in Germania. The community became accustomed to having Jean watch them from her front window.
Jean was a mother and homemaker until the passing of Wib, at which time she went to work as a custodian, cleaning many of the businesses in Bracebridge. Then it was on to the school board and Muskoka Falls Public School. She was also a lifetime member of the Barkway Women’s Institute.
In August 1985, she married Carroll Morrison.
Jean’s retirement was spent gardening, knitting, reading and doing crosswords. She always looked forward to bowling on Mondays.
Jean is survived by her mother, Maude Bruce of London and her sister Doris (Guy) Giddings of Exeter. Jean also leaves behind a son Stephen (Sharon) Gilbert and his children, Cari (Mark) Larsen and Tanya (Ken) Gilbert. Her great-grandchildren are Brandon and Jordon Scott and Mackenzie and Sarah Larsen.
Jean was also thought of as grandmother to Irvin and Travis Miller and John Clouter and Connie Taylor.
Everyone in Germania, adults and children alike, will sorely miss playing Aggravation with Gram Jean.
A special thank-you to the pallbearers: Dick Whithead, Brian Schell, George Syvret, Murray Gilbert, Bruce Cook and Alvin Howson, and honorary pallbearer Bill MacLaughlin.
From one granddaughter to the next: we found a poem you wrote for Grandmother and it was just so fitting we had to include it.
My Gran
Hair as white as silvery snow,
Face alight with a kindly glow,
Ready smile, caressing hand,
All gone now to that other land.
Speak no more of “home” to me,
Ne’re again Muskoka see!
All the joy has left that place;
Carried in my Grannie’s face.
