Audrey Dodson, beloved mother of William Hawkins and Patricia Whitfield, was born in Toronto on August 1, 1912 to Caroline and William Smith. An only child, she was raised with love and care, enjoyed speed skating, dancing and playing tennis as a young girl, and held a sincere love of animals and a zest for living including music, reading, swimming, and in later life, playing cards, board games, quilting and using her computer.
She married John Victor Hawkins in 1935 in Toronto and they raised two children, William and Patricia, and subsequently moved to the village of Utterson in 1950 and then to Bracebridge a few years later. Sadly she leaves her grandchildren: David, his wife Jennifer and baby Alexa of Boston; James, his wife Teresa; and Hayley and Sarah of Thompson, Manitoba. She is fondly remembered by her many dear friends with whom she made a difference and is deeply grieved by daughter Patricia, son William and his wife Catherine, who lovingly sustained her in her declining months.
For decades Audrey was active in the United Church and contributed greatly with generosity to her church community. She was loved by her neighbours and friends who were recipients of her helpfulness and caring. In 1990 she returned to Bracebridge following the death of her second husband Lloyd Dodson and continued a very healthy and active lifestyle when she volunteered in local organizations and assumed leadership in her condo board until her eventual entry into The Pines.
Sincere gratitude is extended to Audrey’s caregivers at The Pines who made her life more comfortable and enjoyable, and to the medical professionals who encouraged and gave wonderful support throughout her stay. Their dedication, consideration and gentleness are worthy of outstanding recognition.
