FESTIVAL HIT. The Norwood Cinema 3 in Bracebridge will be showing Emotional Arithmetic, the closing night film at the Toronto International Film Festival, on Monday, January 28.

Spinning Reels of Bracebridge is proud to bring Emotional Arithmetic, the closing night film at the Toronto International Film Festival, to the Norwood Cinema 3 on Monday, Jan. 28, for one night only.

Adapted from the novel by Canadian author Matt Cohen, Emotional Arithmetic explores the losses that linger decades after the Holocaust, as played out by a fascinating set of characters struggling to come to terms with the past.

Director Paolo Barzman brings together a stellar cast that includes the luminous Susan Sarandon, Canadian icon Christopher Plummer, Ingmar Bergman protégé Max von Sydow, Irish superstar Gabriel Byrne and Quebec powerhouse Roy Dupuis.

Melanie (Sarandon) is a fragile soul who has never recovered emotionally from her imprisonment as a youth during the war in a French concentration camp. When she learns that Jacob (von Sydow), the Soviet poet who protected her there, is still alive, she offers to care for him in his dotage. What she doesn’t know is that accompanying Jacob will be Christopher (Byrne), a fellow prisoner at the camp who, decades later, continues to carry a torch for her. Their reunion forces everyone, including Melanie’s husband David (Plummer) and son Benjamin (Dupuis) to confront their demons.

This screening follows a surprise sellout of the Jan. 14 screening of the smash hit La Vie En Rose at which more than a dozen disappointed movie-lovers had to be turned away.

“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who came out to see this film,” said Spinning Reels co-ordinator Tamsen Tillson. “It’s a great movie, but French with English subtitles and more than two hours long? We were amazed. And to those of you who couldn’t get in, we do apologize for the inconvenience and hope you’ll come out for the great films we have in store.”

The group has just finalized the slate for the remainder of the year, so mark your calendars: Feb. 25 - Breakfast with Scot; March 10 - Lars and the Real Girl; March 24 The Kite Runner; April 14 - The Bodybuilder and I; April 28 - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly; May 12 - The Band’s Visit.

Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in advance at Readers’ World. See you at the movies!
