Great DVD selection to see @yourlibrary

Did you know that Bracebridge Public Library has an ever-increasing collection of DVDs that are free to borrow for one week? A wide range of interests is included, as well as family entertainment and children’s animated movies.

For the literary fans, we have an assortment of book-inspired movies on DVD such as Persuasion (Jane Austen), Adam Bede (George Eliot), Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte), To The Lighthouse (Virginia Woolf) and Our Town (Thornton Wilder). Many literary classics have also been made into television series including the Ruth Rendell mysteries, the Agatha Christie mysteries, A Touch of Frost and The Forsythe Saga.

If you are looking for something a little exotic or different, the library also has a number of foreign films such as Osama, the Golden Globe Winner of 2004 for best foreign language film and the French film La Grande Seduction, with English subtitles.

Travel films are always popular, as are National Geographic specials. Two titles to note in this regard would be The March of the Penguins and Tall Blondes (giraffes), a documentary with Lynn Sher. Another popular series is the Visions Of series with entries from Greece, France, England and Scotland.

For the nostalgic among us, we have a number of classic movies such as Gaslight, musicals like Carousel, and early television series, for example Bonanza. Speaking of TV, many of the more recent long-running programs are very popular with patrons. House, The Simpsons, Six Feet Under, Corner Gas and Quantum Leap all circulate often.

In addition to entertainment DVDs, the collection includes a variety of informational productions: the how-to instructional, such as It’s Pawsible – Dog Training and Ballroom Dancing Basics and Soccer Coaches Guide; documentaries like Great Cars and Fast Food Nation; fitness and exercise such as The Kung Fu Kickboxing Workout and Dance Yourself Thin and Older Adults Walk & Firm; and parenting programs such as Winning at Parenting Without Beating Your Kids.

The Juvenile Department has a variety of children’s DVDs including many old favourites such as Mary Poppins and Bambi. New titles are added all the time. Check the New Book Shelf this week for Scooby-Doo Meets The Harlem Globetrotters and The Magic School Bus Space Adventures, as well as How To Do Homework Without Throwing Up and Dr. Seuss Reading Learning System.

All DVDs can be borrowed, free of charge, for one week. You can renew anything that isn’t brand new for an additional week by calling the library or visiting our website www.bracebridge.library.on.ca. The library also has a drop box by the door for night returns.
