Poker rally to aid camp 

Don’t forget the Dorset Book Club meets at the Dorset Library on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. to talk about Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love. All are welcome. For more information about this program or the library, call the library at 766-9969 any Tuesday or Thursday between 6 and 8:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 2 to 4:30 p.m. or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Organizers for the Dorset Snowball Winter Carnival will be hosting a meeting at the recreation centre on Wednesday, Feb. 6 starting at 7 p.m. to “fill in the gaps.” If you would like to be involved or need community hours, here’s your chance to sign up for an exciting and fun time. The Annual Tall Pines Snowmobile Club and Lions Camp Dorset Poker Rally and St. Valentine’s Dance is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Feb. 9, starting at 10 a.m., trail and lake conditions permitting.

Registration takes place on Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. All events start and finish at Lions Camp Dorset, Kawagama Lake Road.

Space is limited and an OFSC trail permit is required. One-day (for Feb. 9 only), three-day, seven-day and seasonal permits will be available to purchase on-site.

The cost is $30 per hand (19+) and includes a chance at over $10,000 in prizes, a continental breakfast, dinner and dance. First prize is $2,000.

Seventy-five dollars’ worth of pledges gives you a free ride and the top five pledges win cash prizes. Proceeds from the event go toward kidney dialysis, Lions Camp Dorset.

Local MNR stewardship co-ordinator Mike Walsh will be hosting a Maple Syrup Operations and Opportunities workshop at the recreation centre on Monday, Feb. 18 starting at 9 a.m. The cost is $25 per person and includes a pancake and sausage lunch (with maple syrup, of coarse), speakers, handouts, a field trip to the Emes sugar bush, coffee and snacks.
