Celebrate Valentine’s Day with lunch at the legion
Happy 80th birthday celebrations were held on Saturday, Feb. 9 for Frank “Tuner” Jewell when friends and family gathered to celebrate his special day.
Frank, who will be turning 80 on Feb. 13, was born in Gravenhurst and returned to his hometown to retire in 1992. He worked in the elevator business for 25 years in the Hamilton area while living in Waterdown.
Frank and his family enjoyed weekending at the cottage on Taylor Island. He has four children and seven grandchildren. He served as a volunteer firefighter and played hockey as goaltender for a number of years.
During the celebrations at his home, Frank received plaques and letters of congratulations from the Town of Gravenhurst, Prime Minister Stephen Harper, MP Tony Clement, MPP Norm Miller and Premier Dalton McGuinty.
Guests enjoyed afternoon refreshments followed by a delicious evening dinner including a beautifully decorated cake made by Dorothy Ruttan. These days Frank enjoys playing snooker with friends. Happy Birthday Frank!
The Gravenhurst Archives, Muskoka Boat & Heritage Centre, Gravenhurst Public Library and the GGRA invite all members of the public to a meeting on Gravenhurst’s heritage, its identification and preservation on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at the library.
Does Gravenhurst need to identify, promote and preserve its heritage? Gravenhurst has lot of heritage and history and it can contribute to the town economy and development, but ideas and projects involving the public are needed. Come out to the meeting and give your ideas and preferences. Our heritage is our past and our future.

The family of Cliff Rupert, who passed away on Jan. 25, invites you to a special public skating at the Centennial Centre on Sunday, March 2 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Cliff was a very special person to the town of Gravenhurst and his family felt this remembrance would be most suited. Since Cliff was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan, the family is requesting attendees to wear the blue and white colours of the Leafs in honour and support. No blue and white? Not a problem — wear red pants.
Admission is a non-perishable food item for the Salvation Army Food Bank. Pass the word and let’s celebrate the life and memories of Cliff Rupert.
Until next week, remember: There are three kinds of people in the world. Those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened.
