NEWS FROM THE HUB
Local MP featured guest at seniors’ luncheon

The activities list shows the seniors centre is a social, cultural and recreational hub for retired persons in the community. There are 30 activities listed on the back of February’s calendar and a number of special events on the front. The special event is the luncheon on Feb. 22. Tony Clement will be our special guest, and his visit is an opportunity to talk one-on-one about concerns for retirees.

Foot care and a blood pressure clinic are set for Feb. 27. On Feb. 29 about 60 students from Muskoka Beechgrove Public School will come to the centre for an intergeneration event, co-ordinated by Cliff Flavell. He is looking for a few volunteers that enjoy working with children. The indication from the students is they want to participate in a wide range of our programs.

Here are a number of events planned for the next couple of months that members need to note. At the general membership meeting in March, Ken Garth from BDO Dunwoody will speak regarding changes in the income tax regulations that may apply to filing your tax return for 2007. In addition, members of his staff will hold a clinic on March 29 for those members who qualify for this service. The March luncheon is set for March 28 and the April luncheon is scheduled for April 25. The board is looking for a volunteer(s) to co-ordinate the May luncheon.

Past president Cliff Flavell advised the membership at the general meeting of the plans for the 50th anniversary celebration for the USCO. A key date to mark is June 14. There will an open house at the centre featuring the work of USCO as well as the work of our club in support of the seniors’ community in our area. Glenna Kergon is planning a “Follies for the fall” to reflect the theme of 50 years of service.

The board of directors approved as motion to investigate the presentation of a health fair sometime later in the year. The object of the event would be to bring together information and displays showing the health-care services available to retired persons.

Gay Coon, director of ways and means, indicated that a rummage and bake sale is being planned for April. Money generated from such sales are used to fund some of the health and well-being-related activities sponsored by the club. Please start setting aside your good resalable items. If you have items you want to donate but do not have a means of transporting them to the centre, call the centre and someone will arrange to pick them up.

Resolutions for consideration at the annual USCO conference must be submitted by April 11. The resolutions committee, Roy Kerr, Gord Locklin and Cliff Flavell, invite resolutions that relate to the health and well-being of the seniors’ community. Speak to any one of the committee members if you have a subject area you wish to address.
