On Thursday, Feb. 7, the Arts Council of Muskoka (ACM) held its annual general meeting at the Gravenhurst Opera House. The council paired the event with recognition of the Chinese New Year, celebrated on the same day.
Founding ACM member Gayle Dempsey chaired the meeting, reviewing the successes and challenges of 2007 and discussing important objectives and goals for 2008. ACM thanked outgoing board members Wendy Fairbairn, Eva Kulchycki and Shawn Pudsey for their service and extended a warm welcome to new directors Nicole Binstead, Catherine Bradley, Terry Hodges, Terry Riddoch and Susan Ware.
Among other goals, ACM will be focusing on developing new regional and local partnerships with other arts groups, community organizations and businesses. Further to this, ACM invited Colin Old, communications officer at Bethune Memorial House, to deliver a presentation about Dr. Norman Bethune, an international hero, Gravenhurst native and an unrecognized Muskoka artist. Bethune is perhaps more revered overseas for his selfless medical efforts in China, and for this reason, he fit nicely as an additional focus for the AGM. The ACM is appreciative of Colin and Lynn from the Bethune House for their attendance.
ACM has various events planned for its new year. The council is currently working at Spruce Glen Public School in Huntsville, helping to deliver the Kaleidoscope Arts in Education program with the Muskoka Lakes Music Festival and the Huntsville Festival of the Arts. On March 20, in partnership with the Muskoka Enterprise Centre, the council hosts an artists’ forum titled Marketing and Promoting Your Art.
As well, the council will host the second annual Walking in My Mother’s Shoes event on Mother’s Day weekend and the seventh annual Muskoka Chair Event throughout the summer of 2008.
