Music lovers across Muskoka will enjoy a rare treat when Lily Frost, a multi-talented jazz musician and songwriter, performs at the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre next weekend.

The 36-year-old Vancouver native will take to the stage March 15 to offer show goers a mix of her self-penned songs, music she describes as a combination of spaghetti western guitar, “melancholic truthfulness” and “musical magic realism with cinematic dimensions.”

“Music is like medicine to me,” said Frost. “I find music a channel for truths which are too challenging to speak.”

Frost, whose parents now live in Bracebridge, has shared the stage with the likes of Cold Play and the Cowboy Junkies. She has even had her music featured in television commercials and segments of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.

The Toronto songstress said she knew she wanted to sing at a young age. She first began performing in the late 1980s in Montreal and it didn’t take long until she was hooked, she said.

“That began my performing (career) and I have been in bands or performing jazz or singing solo every since.”

Frost now writes both her own music and lyrics.  “I have two sides, my interpreting jazzy singing voice and then the songs . . . which are more focused on the lyrics and production.”

To date, Frost has released a total of eight albums, and performed all over America, as well as England and Cairo. Her latest CD features her version of a number of Billie Holiday songs.

“I feel like music is my path and it takes me where it will,” she said.

Tickets for the Lily Frost show are $28. For more information contact the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre at 645-8400.
