May 20, 1922 – February 29, 2008
With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Georgina Irma Ladanyi, cherished mother of Georgina Ladanyi (Peter May) and Elizabeth Ladanyi (Brian Corbett), first wife of the late Stephen Ladanyi, on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Leisureworld, Gravenhurst.
Born in Nagyvarad, Tran-sylvania, Hungary on May 20, 1922, by 1950 Georgina immigrated to England to escape the Communist regime in Hungary. There, she spent three years as a nanny before sailing to Canada on the Canberra in November 1953. In Toronto she met and married Steven Ladanyi. They had each vacationed at the old Golden Gate Lodge in Milford Bay and decided to settle and raise a family in Muskoka. In 1957 they purchased Balmoral Lodge on Sparrow Lake and ran it as a resort until 1964 when the old lodge was converted into an old age home.
St. Thomas became her home after separation from Stephen in 1967. Georgina worked and lived at Alma College for several years and later went on to obtain her real estate licence, becoming a successful real estate agent.
Her pleasures included gardening, reading, playing chess and scrabble, collecting stones for her garden on the beach in Port Stanley and visiting her family in Muskoka.
Georgina had a great faith and was deeply involved with and committed to her religion. She was an elder at Central United Church. She then was involved with founding Living Hope Community Church where she was a devout member and made many close friends.
Due to failing health, in 2000, she decided to relocate to Gravenhurst to be near her two daughters. Georgina resided at Gravenhurst Manor for just over three years prior to her stay at Leisureworld.
Her compassion, great wit and humour will be missed by all who came to know and love her, especially her family, beloved son-in-law Jamie Lennie from Torrance and dear friends Janis MacNaughton from Gravenhurst, Rae and Dave Williamson, Cristel and Roger Cyr, Donna and John Greenway, Corrie DeValadares and her fellowship in faith and friends in St. Thomas.
Georgina will be cremated and there will be a service to celebrate her life in the spring. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society.
