January 24, 1927 – March 10, 2008

Lois Sylvia Hastings passed away peacefully on March 10, 2008 at Leisureworld Muskoka in her 82nd year.

She was predeceased by her husband Jack and is survived by her children Judy (Bob Stone), Michael (Chyvonne), and David. She is lovingly remembered by grandchildren Krista (David Thomas), Jeremy and Jeff Stone, Kara (Mark Vancise), Kaylea (Kevin Ferguson), Jodie (Daryl Knudson), and Amanda Hastings. She was the dear great-grandmother of Jared Thomas, Jordan Knudson and Hannah Vancise.

Daughter of the late Charles and Amelia Fleming, Lois was born in Hanover, Ontario on Jan. 24, 1927. The family moved to Muskoka where Charles was involved in the logging and lumber industry. She was educated in Gravenhurst and Branksome Hall, Toronto. In 1945, Lois married Jack Hastings and they became owners of Fleming Lumber and Hastings Home Builders until their retirement.

Lois was actively involved in her community. She was youth leader and member of the United Church Women. Literacy was a central issue to Lois. As a result, she joined the Gravenhurst Library Board and served from 1971 to 1976 and 1984 to 1997 as secretary and again as chair. She played an important role in the library’s development.

Environmental concerns were also central to Lois. She was committed to several groups, especially the Central Ontario Rideau-Trent-Severn Waterway and Muskoka Heritage Foundation.

Lois was a generous and loving mother and grandmother who could be depended upon for help and support at any time.

Physical fitness was also a goal for Lois. Daily activities included yoga, swimming, cycling and cross-country skiing in winter. She spent many happy summers with family and friends at her cottage on Kahshe Lake. Lois and Jack found time to travel together, support the arts and join a seniors’ band where she was the drummer.

Alzheimer’s slowed Lois and she became a resident of Leisureworld Muskoka in 2001 but she retained her sweet and loving nature.

The family received friends at the W. J. Cavill Funeral Home in Gravenhurst on March 14, 2008 before the service.

Spring interment will take place at St. Andrews-St. James Cemetery, Orillia. In memory, donations to the Alzheimer Society or the Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Rev. Johanne Hills officiated at the chapel funeral service.
