Soccer club gets go-ahead for storage shed

Gravenhurst Minor Soccer is not only building on its registrations, but also plans to build a storage shed on town property after the community services committee of town council signed off on a five-year lease agreement earlier this month.

With a $4,000 grant from Muskoka Community Futures Development Corporation, the club will build a 10-by-20-foot storage shed to house its equipment on the north end of the Muskoka Wharf soccer field.

Debbie Broderick, manager of community services for the town, explained the shed will maintain the appearance of the existing buildings at the wharf.

The lease, which requires the club to pay $1 per year, states subleasing is not permitted and the club will be responsible for all maintenance, insurance and repairs associated with the shed.

Sixty-five youth have already registered to play minor soccer this year and the late registrations continue to pile in, said club president John Byrne.

Late registration

A late registration session will be offered March 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the lobby at Gravenhurst Centennial Centre.

Last year about 250 children registered for soccer during registrations that ran later in the year when the weather was more like spring, said Byrne.

He said the soccer programs have changed and this year will feature three divisions of in-town house league for children under 10 years old, and a travelling house league through the Simcoe County Recreation League for children aged 11 to 16.

“We have to do it early this year in order to have the programs organized by the end of March,” he said.

Anyone interested in coaching or refereeing is asked to call John Byrne at 645-5281, or 646-0960 during the evening.
