Town left decorative lights on downtown
Apr 02, 2008

The symbolic gesture of “turning off the lights” during Earth Hour this past Saturday night hopefully made an impression on our energy-mad habits, and will result in a conscious effort to reduce our demand on a daily basis.

The residents of Bracebridge get it, as do some of the businesses. Does the town? While the official Earth Hour was being recognized, I found it very bizarre that one could walk along Manitoba Street under the glow from decorative snowflake lights that are attached to the street lamps.

Fortunately, a main attraction on the main street, the Norwood Cinema, which could have justified keeping its lights on during their peak business hour, decided to power down and demonstrate their understanding of the significance of Earth Hour.

A simple act

In a simple act of leaving unnecessary lights on, the town is giving a mixed message to its residents. To end with an opportunity for “redemption”, I challenge the Town of Bracebridge to reduce its lighting to only that which is required for safety this coming Saturday, April 5, 2008.
