Your article, dated March 26 titled “Windermere firefighters call it quits” filled us with dread.
You see, we live in Dee Bank Village in the Windermere area. The resignations of Jim Poirier and the other Windermere firefighters seem a drastic measure, but this very public action has made us aware of the ongoing problems in our fire department.
When a man with the integrity and experience of Mr. Poirier says there are problems with safety and the new fire trucks, we believe him.
Township fire chief Jim Sawkins says the resignations are “unfortunate.” People in our community are using much stronger language to describe our fire department’s loss.
Mr. Sawkins also says, “The brothers and sisters (within the rest of the fire department) are standing by with open arms to welcome Windermere into the family.” Is Windermere not part of “the family” now?
We urge Mr. Sawkins to confer with the firefighters who resigned and address their concerns instead of just sweeping the problems under “the family” rug.
