A death at the Bracebridge OPP detachment has sparked an investigation by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

On Monday a male in custody at the detachment began to experience medical distress, according to the OPP. He was attended to by officers while awaiting the arrival of an ambulance, said police. He was then transported to South Muskoka Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At 7:50 p.m. on Monday, the SIU was contacted by Bracebridge OPP.

“We dispatched two investigators and a forensic investigator, and they’re actively probing the circumstances of the death,” said Frank Phillips, SIU communications manager.

Phillips said the deceased man was a 31-year-old Oshawa resident. He was identified in subsequent media reports as Jonathan Weeks.

The SIU investigates incidents involving the police that have resulted in serious injury or death.

“We’ll identify the area where it occurred, photographs are taken . . . and the coroner’s office will be involved. They will do a post-mortem or an autopsy and gather whatever evidence they can,” said Phillips. “We’ll also identify officers that are either subject officers or witness officers and then go from there.”

Phillips said there is no specific timeline for the investigation.

“It will take as long as it takes to complete a full and impartial investigation,” he said.

Bracebridge OPP would not release any information, or comment on the incident.
