The 2008 curling season ended in Bala last week with a wrap-up session of “hot shots”. With 20 participants, and more just out to enjoy the action, it was a great evening of fun and tension as the last 14 weeks of games, disguised as practice, came down to Adam Schell, one of the club’s newest members, taking the prize. With many of the club’s venerable players only mustering one, two or perhaps six points, Adam pulled out the stops and took the gold with 17. He was also one of the few that did a perfect double takeout. Congratulations Adam and hope to have you back with us again next year. On my team, perhaps.
Despite our delayed start due to a major breakdown in our aging plant, the season was a huge success. With members supporting us and understanding the difficulties we encountered, we were up and running just before the new year. Port Carling and Gravenhurst both helped out immensely by providing some ice time and opening a few draws to some of our anxious players. Thanks once again to these sister clubs.
With your executive already planning for next year, we hope members will reserve May 3 on their calendars to come out to the annual general meeting and hear what is being worked on for the club in 2009. Also, there are positions that will need to be filled on the board as there is a turnover of board members required by our bylaws. It is a task that is not too time-consuming and fresh ideas are welcomed to keep a strong and vibrant club.
I also would like to thank the 25 sponsors who placed ads around our rink and sponsored Bala’s masters league team. We appreciate your support and trust our members and guests patronize your businesses in return.
The only other date fixed for publication at this time is the annual golf classic on Sept. 7. Details for other events will be publicized as they are developed.
That’s it for now, so hope everyone had a great season of curling and see you May 3.
