A man who died in police custody last week has been identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Weeks of Oshawa.According to Ontario Provincial Police, the man went into medical distress March 31 at the Bracebridge detachment of the OPP. He was transported to South Muskoka Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead just after 7 p.m.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was subsequently contacted and continues to investigate.
“The investigation is ongoing,” said Frank Phillips, SIU communications manager, late Monday. “The post-mortem was conducted (last Tuesday). Now we have to wait for a complete report from the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto. The timing of that is beyond our control. We just have to hope they get it done as soon as possible.”
Phillips said the SIU has identified five witness officers in the incident, but no subject officers at this time.
In a media report, Weeks’ fiancée Nancy Schroeder said Weeks had been severely depressed and was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Doctors were able to convince Weeks to receive electroshock therapy for his condition, said Schroeder, and he had just received his final treatment the Friday before his death.
Schroeder said Weeks was a kind man, but had a troubled past and had previously attempted suicide.
Weeks served time for an assault charge out west, but came to Ontario for a new start, said Schroeder.
In Oshawa, where the couple lived, they recently received harassing phone calls and decided to contact the local police to get the calls on record, said Schroeder. However, when the police arrived on the afternoon of March 31 they arrested Weeks for an outstanding assault stemming from a 2003 incident in Gravenhurst.
At roughly 5 a.m. the next morning, Schroeder said she received a call informing her that Weeks had been found slumped in his cell.
Neither Bracebridge OPP nor the SIU would release information on why Weeks was transferred to the Bracebridge detachment, after his arrest in Oshawa.
