As an aging baby boomer who has actively participated in the civil rights movement, the women’s movement and the peace movement, it was heartening to see a group of young people drawing attention to the situation in Darfur, Sudan at Memorial Park in Bracebridge on Saturday.
They were informed, polite and passionate about their protest over the desperate conditions created over the last five years by drought, poverty and government corruption. With over 400,000 people killed, entire villages burned, mass looting and rape, genocide is taking place with little attention given to the plight of the people of Darfur. But then, there is no oil there.
Friday marked the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. for speaking out for human rights. His words are as relevant today as they were then: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
Thank you to those young people at Memorial Park who cared enough to speak out.
