A month-long cleanup of home heating oil that spilled on the side of the southbound lanes of Hwy. 11 in Kilworthy is now complete, according to a district supervisor of the Barrie office of the Ministry of the Environment (MOE).Jason Lehouillier told this newspaper the environmental cleanup crew from Environmental Solutions finished up at the site near Big Pine Acres trailer home park on Friday after tests revealed no more contaminants were detected in the soil.
The cleanup was required after a collision occurred between a tractor-trailer and fuel tanker carrying 50,000 litres of home heating oil on March 5.
The collision caused a breach in the tanks carrying the heating oil, spilling approximately 15,000 litres into the west ditch of the highway. For the duration of the cleanup, traffic was reduced to one lane on Hwy. 11 south.
“Essentially the cleanup is complete,” Lehouillier said, noting a final report from the cleanup company will be submitted for MOE review.
He said continued monitoring of the wells and soils in the area will ensure there are no impacts to groundwater.
