A trust fund has been established for a family who narrowly escaped a fire that started in the basement of a dwelling in the wartime area of Gravenhurst in the early morning hours on Saturday.Volunteers from Gravenhurst Fire Department Stations 1 and 2 received the call for a residential structure fire at 260 Kingswood Drive at 12:09 a.m., said deputy fire chief John Black.
Twenty-four firefighters arrived on the scene to bring the fire under control.
Though the house appears almost normal from the outside, the interior will need a lot of work because of smoke and water damage. The family did not have content insurance and has lost quite a number of possessions.
Black said the family was lucky to get out alive of the “hot and smoky” fire.
Sherry Reaume and her children were asleep when the fire started and quickly evacuated, escaping the fire with minor injuries, she said.
Her five-year-old son who suffers from Aspergers received second and third degree burns on his feet, she said.
Donations to the trust fund may be made at any TD Canada Trust branch. The account number is 2488-6272952. See the Gravenhurst Weekender for an in-depth interview.
