It could be weeks before the Office of the Fire Marshal determines the cause of the fire that destroyed two retail stores in the downtown core last week, says Bracebridge fire chief Murray Medley.

“We’re still waiting at this point,” said Medley Monday. Investigators left the scene of the blaze Wednesday, but will likely take many more days before they conclude their investigation, he said.

The fire broke out late on the evening of April 21. It destroyed the building at 232 Manitoba St., which housed an electronics business and a Surf Paradise outlet.

The remnants of the building have since been removed from the site.

Medley initially pegged the damage at around $1 million.

Bracebridge OPP are also investigating the fire, in conjunction with the Office of the Fire Marshal. Bracebridge OPP media relations officer Skeeter Kruger said police hope to release more information on their investigation later this week.
